What is a HUD home?

A HUD home is a one- to four-unit home owned by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD takes ownership after an FHA-insured mortgage isn't repaid, then sells the home to recover its costs. Prices are set from an appraisal, and homes are sold as-is, so a little homework before you bid goes a long way.

How buying a HUD home works

1. Pick a home from the list below and tap it for photos, details and the bid deadline.
2. See it in person. Schedule a showing so you know what you're bidding on.
3. Get your financing ready. A pre-approval letter or proof of funds goes with your bid.
4. Submit your bid. HUD homes are sold through online bids, and a HUD-registered broker submits the bid for you.

Who can bid?

People who plan to live in the home get first shot. During the first part of the listing, called the Exclusive period, HUD accepts bids only from owner-occupants, along with certain nonprofit and government buyers. After that, the Extended period opens bidding to everyone, including investors. Each home below shows which period it's in.

How can I pay for it?

Depending on the home's condition, buyers use FHA loans, FHA 203(k) renovation loans, VA, conventional loans or cash. Each listing shows HUD's property class, which tells you which loans are likely to work. My financing guide explains it in plain language.
